Events at DSMS

DSMS believes in a totally integrated personality and therefore is in a continuous endeavour to develop a college curriculum based on a holistic approach. And it is with this purpose in mind, we help students to look beyond the narrow confines of prescribed text books, classrooms and syllabus. Several cultural and literary activities round the year help them to indulge in healthy pastime interests, the social work projects helps them develop the much needed awareness required of a good human being. They emerge as a confident individual and is definitely more marketable as a professional on their completion of their DSMS tenure of three consecutive years.

20 thApril, 2010 : Seminar On Organic Food

A seminar on Organic food was held in the college on 20th April 2010. The guest speakers for the seminar were Mr Vikas Chadha, Chief Consultant, Satavic Farms & Mr Eugene Gomes , Sr Sous Chef, The Trident Oberoi ,Mumbai.

Mr Chadha made a comparison between how organic farming is different from conventional farming. He started with organic farming in India then continued with the myths & fallacies about organic farming, such as yield of organic farming is lower than chemical farming, organic farming is not economical, there is big money in organic farming , not using chemical fertilizer & pesticide is organic farming.

The second speaker for the day was Mr Anish Banerjee Department -in charge F&B spoke about the beginning of organic food, the concept of organic food, against chemical ripening of fruits & vegetables, nutritional facts their input on the eco system and energy efficiency of the organic foods.

Chef Eugene Gomes spoke about unavailability of organic food in the Indian kitchen He also stressed upon why guest are not asking for organic food? There are also very limited suppliers providing organic ingredients.

Mr Arunangshu Bhattacharya, Professor gave an overview about the origin of organic wine, sustainability, organic winemaking & biodynamic wine making. He also said about how added sulfites are used in wine making, though organic wines are not completely sulfite free but the quantity is very less.

Two students of Bhmct 6th Semester Kaustav Ranjan Dasgupta & Shekhar Suman said why we should go for organic food, what is done to the food to increase the yield & what we should do now. The students also showed a video to make it more interesting .

 
3 students (1 - BCA and 2 - BBA) from DSMS participated in an inter college fest at AIMS College, Durgapur and received the following awards.

10 thMarch, 2010 : DSMS family members feel proud of Arunava Bhattacharjee, student of B.C.A. 2nd year who has won the 1st prize in the Inter College Debate Competition at the AIMS Syndicate Management College Annual Fest 2010.

 

9 thMarch, 2010 : Carom tournament

A carom tournament was organized at the D.S.M.S. Boys' Hostel from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Out of the 40 participating students, Sarwar Alam of B.C.A. 1st year and Waqar Hashmi of B.H.M.C.T. 2nd year emerged as the winning duo.

 

19 thFebruary, 2010 : Seminar on Yield Management in hotel Front Office

Durgapur Society of Management Science BHMCT department organized a seminar on Yield Management in hotel Front Office on 19th February 2010. Now you may ask what yield management is. Yield Management is demand forecasting system designed to maximize revenue by holding room rates high when demand of room is high and decreasing room rates when demand is low.

The key note speakers for the seminar were Mr. Atulya Nidhi, Associate Director Room Division -The Park Vizag & Mr. Afzal Ishfaque, Training Manager - The Park Kolkata.

Both of them emphasized on the need of yield management & its requirement in present scenario since the rooms in a hotel are fixed. So to increase the revenue of the hotel we have to consider demand fluctuations. Mr. Nidhi stressed upon improved forecasting of rooms, better inventory control and enhanced coordination between front office & sales division. While Mr. Afzal focused upon the new trend towards customer delight rather than for customer satisfaction. He also explained in detail the difference between a customer and a guest & their features.

Final year students of BHMCT also participated in the seminar Sayantan Roy gave an introduction to yield management and about market segment identification, forecasting pricing & inventory allocation .Mr. Partho Pratim Seal, Asst Professor -DSMS spoke about Implementation of Yield management & Yield management software since knowledge without its implementation is incomplete. The advantage of Yield management Software helps in storing, retrieving and manipulating great amount of data on a broad range of factors influencing room revenue. Pallavi Keshri a final year student said about how yield management is measured and various formulae for calculating it. Shubham Jaiswal a student of final year spoke about yield in recession. He said how recession had an effect on hotel industry, exclusively in terms of revenue and obtaining maximum utilization of resources in hand. It helps in coping with adverse economic situation as long as the company takes sufficient time to understand new markets or develop new products.

25th thJanuary, 2010 : The 2nd DOT training under FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

The 2nd DOT training under FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME commenced from 25th January09 at DSMS Business School Campus .The second faculty training, named DOT(Design of Training)was conducted by Mr.Angshuman Chatterjee, Director, DSMS.

Mr. ABHIJAN DUTTA, Professor NIT Inaugurated the programme and also attended the EVALUATION session.

18th th to 22 nd January, 2010 : Xtravaganza 2010

DSMS rocked with the xtravaganza fever from 18th to the 22nd January2010.Students vied with each other round the clock to prove their talents in various cultural and oratory fields. 3 prominent performing groups Sarabhuj,chandrabindoo,kolkata music academy visited DSMS with their troops and added the special touch to the annual college event.Academic and extracurricular prizes were given out.
