A seminar on Organic food was held in the college on 20th April 2010. The guest speakers for the seminar were Mr Vikas Chadha, Chief Consultant, Satavic Farms & Mr Eugene Gomes , Sr Sous Chef, The Trident Oberoi ,Mumbai.
Mr Chadha made a comparison between how organic farming is different from conventional farming. He started with organic farming in India then continued with the myths & fallacies about organic farming, such as yield of organic farming is lower than chemical farming, organic farming is not economical, there is big money in organic farming , not using chemical fertilizer & pesticide is organic farming.
The second speaker for the day was Mr Anish Banerjee Department -in charge F&B spoke about the beginning of organic food, the concept of organic food, against chemical ripening of fruits & vegetables, nutritional facts their input on the eco system and energy efficiency of the organic foods.
Chef Eugene Gomes spoke about unavailability of organic food in the Indian kitchen He also stressed upon why guest are not asking for organic food? There are also very limited suppliers providing organic ingredients.
Mr Arunangshu Bhattacharya, Professor gave an overview about the origin of organic wine, sustainability, organic winemaking & biodynamic wine making. He also said about how added sulfites are used in wine making, though organic wines are not completely sulfite free but the quantity is very less.
Two students of Bhmct 6th Semester Kaustav Ranjan Dasgupta & Shekhar Suman said why we should go for organic food, what is done to the food to increase the yield & what we should do now. The students also showed a video to make it more interesting .
